On Saturday, Mandeville recorded the robbery and murder of yet another of its businessmen. This 65-year-old man was robbed and brutally murdered at the front of his business place and in front of his wife.
A few weeks ago, the men who came up with the idea of M Central Watch spoke of the frequency of this type of activity in Mandeville, and the equally 'frequent' slow response of the area police to these situations. The locale of this latest incident has been one where several robberies have been taking place within the last few weeks. Yet, no adjustment has been made to the manner or pattern of policing in the area.
Established system
Winston Lawson, head of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, has publicly declared his objection to the formation of the M Central Watch, questioning its legitimacy. He instead suggested that we depend on the established system of public security, the police. Well Sir, that did not protect this man Saturday night, did not protect the Lyns, and did not protect the woman whose home was robbed while she was held at gunpoint, nor the robbery at the house close to the National Commercial Bank, and the several other numerous cases of robbery since the start of October.
Comfort zone
While I appreciate your concern, the hundreds of people who are not guaranteed a salary at the end of the month, but are required to guarantee several salaries weekly are not in the same comfort zone as you are and have absolutely no confidence in the JCF's ability to deal with crime in Mandeville.
In 2007, you were quoted in the media as saying "we will not be held hostage by criminals". Well, we are not being held hostage, we are being murdered. We need additional assistance and M Central Watch might just be the answer.
I am, etc.,
