Kemoy Campbell of Bellefield extended his lead and Natoya Goule dropped out of the race, as action continued in the Burger King/Jamdammers Road Race Series with the MHF 5K in St Elizabeth on Sunday.
Campbell, for the fourth time, topped the field in 17 minutes and 42 seconds, finishing ahead of Shawn Pitter of Redemption Track Club (18:20) and Kirk Brown of Ebony Seek (18:29).
Campbell was happy with the outcome. "The race was pretty good, I enjoyed it, it was a very good place to run under the bamboo," he said.
Goule suffered from abdominal pain, which prevented her from finishing the race. She started the day trailing overall leader Stacey Bell by one point in the series.
Tanice Barnett won the female segment in Sunday's event in 21 minutes flat, beating the G.C. Foster College pair of Stacey Bell (22:20) and Twishana Williams (22:32), who are now the only two title contenders heading into this Sunday's Burger King 10k in Portmore.
Barnett said it was not an easy race, especially coming on the heels of the UWI Half Marathon, which was held the previous weekend in Trinidad and Tobago.
"If it's something that you want, you will just have to go out there with the determination if you need it," she said.
Bell maintained her lead atop the standing. "I am very thankful for this second place because I thought Goule was going to finish ahead of me, which would make us tie going into the final race," she said.
In the high schools section, Holmwood beat Vere and Edwin Allen in the male section. Holmwood also won the female section, their first of the season, over Edwin Allen, who still lead the series, and St Elizabeth Technical.
