Tivoli Gardens lifted their first Digicel Premier League (DPL) end-of-first-round title on Sunday with goals from Navion Boyd and Keammar Daley, getting the better of St Georges in the final played inside the National Stadium, and coach Lenworth Hyde Snr maintains that there is no room for complacency after notching their eighth victory in 12 games this season.
Sunday's win was Tivoli's second over the Portland-based St Georges this season after their 1-0 victory two weeks ago at Tivoli. But Hyde does not believe their early-season success will cause them to get complacent.
"They know they have to work even harder in the second round. It won't be difficult to keep them (Tivoli players) grounded, they understand what they need to do, they set themselves the targets and know what is required of them.
"As coaches we have to ensure they know the seriousness of successfully defending our title, so we have to keep motivating them and try to keep them focused on the task at hand."
Outstanding defenders
The former Portmore United and Harbour View tactician expressed satisfaction with his team's approach to the game and was particularly pleased with the effort of his defenders, who came under constant pressure from a rampant St Georges outfit in the second-half.
"I am satisfied with how the team played in parts. We didn't play well for the full 90 minutes but we had an excellent first-half. St Georges came out very strongly in the second-half and my team responded very well defensively, and this is something that I am particularly pleased about. We have been working hard on our defence. We did some talking and made some adjustments, and for the last two games we have not conceded a goal," Hyde noted.
Meanwhile, St Georges' Braxton Hyre offered congratulations to Tivoli Gardens and insisted that his team will be looking to move on from the loss and get their DPL ambitions back on track.
"We are happy we are here and we will just put this aside and move on. Congratulations to Tivoli, I think my team played well. Tivoli played the better first-half but we came out in the second-half and played a better game."
Hyre pointed out that the experience will serve his players well going forward into the season and he is expecting them to respond positively to the defeat.
"It's a win-win for us, we may not have won in terms of the result but it's a learning process and we took a lot away from this game, in terms of knowing where we need to improve and strengthen," said Hyre.
"For a lot of my players it was the first time playing at that level and inside the National Stadium, so overall it was a great experience and we can only get better from this point onwards."
