LETTER OF THE DAY - Bored with sideshows
The Editor, Sir:

I felt compelled to write this based on your letter of the day printed in your paper of Friday, November 6. In this context, I view the media (your good selves) and we (the people) as the parents and the politicians as our children.

I have become increasingly bored and appalled by the behaviour of politicians (our children) and how they treat with the critical matters from which we are suffering. The most recent case in point is the discussion about the contract of the former governor of the Bank of Jamaica and the related statements by the prime minister in Parliament on Tuesday, November 3.

'repugnant'?

The prime minister describes sections of the former governor's contract as "repugnant". Well, may I (through you) ask the prime minister how high on the "repugnant" scale is it for him to have the country pay for the upkeep of an official residence for our prime minister at Vale Royal, a residence into which he has refused to move? Choosing instead to reside in his own house, for which, it is believed, the public may well be paying maintenance or "rental". Many of us in the society view that situation as "repugnant"; and, if this is the case, is the prime minister not complicit and somewhat insincere in "bawling out" against the former governor's contract?

I must ask, are we as the 'parents' allowing our children to get away with too much? As your editorials have said on several occasions, these are serious times that require serious leadership. I am tired of the sideshows. Since we have heard that we need a standby agreement with the International Monetary Fund, I cannot recall the prime minister updating us seriously in the Parliament on that issue. (At least not while the sun is shining).

I would hate to have to conclude that the prime minister is is either himself distracted from the real issues or is trying to distract us from them.

I also want to state clearly so that no one can misconstrue this letter - I am utterly bored and disappointed by the level of discussion and and lack of seriousness in the Parliament and on both sides. I am peeved by the puerile behaviour and poor quality of the contributions of the younger MPs on both sides. The promise and shine of Lisa Hanna, Andrew Holness, Natalie Neita Headley and Christopher Tufton have faded.

I believe it is time that as their "parents" we take out the rod and make sure that they do better. If we fail to make them accountable then the anarchy that is on its way will be our own faults.

I am disappointed.

I am, etc.,
