Donovan 'Donnie' Bunting is an avid worker in the field of agriculture and has dedicated his life to the sector. For that reason, on August 6, he was appointed to the Order of Distinction in the rank of officer(OD) for his devoted service in the field.
Bunting says he was on his sheep farm in Longville, Clarendon, when a government package came for him. He says not knowing what was in it, he was very surprised after reading its contents to discover that he had received an OD.
Very surprised
"I thought there were many more people in the field of agriculture who could have got it but did not, so I was very surprised," he says.
Bunting's love affair with agriculture began as a boy, as his father was a farmer and operated the Longville farm. He used to breed Siamese fighting fish as a hobby. But, after going away to Somerset College of Agriculture in England in 1969, he came home and started what is the second largest fish farm in Jamaica. He is also the president of the Sheep Farmers Association. He is quite passionate about what he does and though it is a tough job he has fun doing what he loves.
Though Bunting is excited, he is not sure what he will be wearing to the National Honours and Awards ceremony that will be held on Heroes Day, Monday, October 19. He says he is not someone who wears suits that often. He is more into wearing shorts, given his job - operating a fish and sheep farm. In fact, he notes that he only owns one dark brown suit that he wore to his son's wedding last year.
"However, my concern is that I have been gaining weight so I don't even know if it will still fit, otherwise, I am going to have to buy one."
