Hi-Lo Food Stores started in Jamaica on April 29, 1954, as the first supermarket originally owned and operated by the Neal and Massey Group.

A household name from its inception, the success of the Cross Roads location signalled that a similar store set-up was required in other locations. Soon came the opening of the Tropical Plaza, Liguanea Plaza, Manor Park and Mandeville stores.
