Jamaica still has good Samaritans

A returning resident who employed the services of a Jamaica Union of Travellers' Association (JUTA) taxi to transport him home from the airport was pleased to have encountered an honest Jamaican.

The returning resident thought he had removed all his belongings on leaving the taxi, but later realised he had left a bottle of liquor in the vehicle.

"I had no information about the name or contact information for the taxi driver and just assumed that I would not see it (bottle of liquor) again," the returning resident said. "To my amazement, the taxi driver found his way back to my home the following morning and said his wife had seen the box in the vehicle and concluded that it had to be mine and so drove all the way back to my home to deliver it."

Philip Linton, who has been a taxi driver for 32 years, told The Gleaner he decided to return the box because it was just the way he was grown.

Honesty a way of life

"A so mi grandmother grow mi, to be honest, and a same way mi grow mi children. I was wondering if I could find the house because it was in the night that I had dropped him off but, after some driving, I found it. A lot of people wouldn't have done it but it goes to show that there are still good people in Jamaica."

On a previous occasion, Linton dropped someone at a hotel and afterwards realised the person had left his wallet with a significant sum of money and some IDs, including a green card. On that occasion, he also made his way back to the hotel and returned the wallet.

"Anything yu no work for it no stay wid yu," Linton argued.

Just last Thursday, Linton experienced the other side of Jamaica as someone broke into his coaster bus parked at his home and stole a DVD player and two batteries.

"The Saturday the don in the area carried back the DVD player, so if I was a thief mi wouldn't get it back. It pay fi do good. Do good and good will follow you."
