Junior Francis, head coach of Constant Spring's Women football team, said he is not overly preturubed at their second-from-bottom preliminary group finish in what was their first season in the nation's top-flight football competition, the Sherwin Williams Women's League.

Speaking after his team's entertaining 2-1 win over Arnett Gardens at Constant Spring in their final group fixture last Saturday, Francis believes his team gained added exposure, and with the club working with a three-year framework, the result augurs well for them in the future.

GROUP POSITION

"We finished second from bottom in our group, but I am not totally disappointed. It's our first season and we are in a building programme. In fact, this is the first year of a three-year plan. Next year, the plan is to be competitive and come year three to really challenge for the title," said Francis.

Constant Spring, who lost to Arnett in the first round of the competition, were led to victory on a double from forward Kessian Walker. The skilful and quick Walker, a former Ewarton High player, scored in the 37th minute to put her team in the lead, and after Chael Martin brought Arnett back in the 45th, scored the winner 12 minutes after the break.

ANOTHER STRIKER

Constant Spring, buoyed by the introduction of another striker, Tiffany Nash, should have increased their lead thereafter but thanks to good defending and goalkeeping, they were denied.

"It was a poor season for us. At the start of the season, we had some good girls but had to let them go. We were then forced to use a new and inexperienced team and it cost us," said Arnett coach, Mark Arthurs."We were also defeated by indiscipline, both on the part of the players and the coaching staff. Next year, we hope to do much better," he added.

The competition, which is now at its semi-final stage, will see defending champions Barbican, Waterhouse, Harbour View and Portmore Strikers contesting the final four, which will be played on a home-and-away basis, beginning on Saturday.

The quarter-finals of the Sherwin Williams Colourscape Knockout, will be played on Wednesday.
