World Champs saga deepens - Top athletes could be in trouble for missing camp

Jamaica's track and field contingent could take on the world next weekend at the 12th IAAF World Championships in Berlin, Germany, without three of its biggest names.

Reports reaching The Gleaner are that at least three of the country's top athletes, Asafa Powell, the second-fastest man in the world; Olympic 400m silver medallist Shericka Williams and national 100m hurdles record-holder Brigitte Foster-Hylton, could be dropped from Jamaica's team.

Paying the price

Williams, on her Facebook wall, wrote "oh well, JAAA (Jamaica Amateur Athletic Federation) say we can't run at world cham-pionship because we did not attend the training champ".

All three athletes, along with other members of the high-profile MVP Track Club, coached by Stephen Francis, failed to report for the JAAA's mandatory training camp in Nuremburg, Germany, at last Thursday's start time.

Mandatory camps

The JAAA has repeatedly made it clear that all its camps are mandatory and any athlete who failed to attend would not be allowed to take part in the championships.

Paul Doyle, who is the athletes agent, said: "I have not been notified of anything of that sort," but made it clear that he would be surprised if such a decision was taken.

Doyle said he "wrote to them (JAAA management) and asked if the camp was mandatory and I received no answer". The management team at the Nuremberg training base could not be reached for comment
