Govern by law, not political expediency
THE EDITOR, Sir:

I watched the television rebroadcast of the 1962 Independence celebration yesterday. As I saw Princess Margaret handed the new Constitution of Jamaica to Prime Minister Alexander Bustamante, I could not help feeling a tinge of sadness.

Imagine, 47 years later our political, business, social leaders, intellectuals and citizens are finding it very difficult to understand the primacy of the Constitution over political expediency, as reflected in the debate re the dual citizen issue.

Must black people forever remain tribalists? When will we understand the importance of an orderly society ruled by law, and not by political expediency?

Until we understand this, Emancipation and Independance will remain but fleeting illusions to be pursued but never attained.

I am, etc.,

Wayne McKenzie
