More power to Hay-Webster

Hay-Webster

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I would like to publicly offer my support to the hard-working member of parliament (MP) for South Central St Catherine, Sharon Hay-Webster, who has commendably indicated her intention to renounce her American citizenship.

As one of her constituents, I can attest to the valiant contribution that our MP has made to the constituency. Since Mrs Hay-Webster has taken over the reins, the tensions, especially in Spanish Town, have decreased. On occasions where there has been a flare-up, unlike previous times, through physical dialogue and collaboration with both sides, Mrs Hay-Webster has managed to contribute significantly to the maintenance of calm. It is sad that her position is being called into question due to the fact that she was born elsewhere. Mrs Hay-Webster is one of our own and should be treated accordingly.

I am of the opinion that her implementation of programmes geared towards getting the youth in her constituency off the streets makes her one of the few MPs who have shown a genuine commitment to development through fearless engagement of the youth. Non-partisan allocation of resources and an emphasis on skill-oriented empowerment has been a trademark of her tenure.

Sections of the media have relayed the impression that there is reluctance within Mrs Hay-Webster's party to offer her support. This is unfortunate, but I would like to implore our MP to continue to represent and not give up on us the residents of South Central St Catherine. More power to her.

I am, etc.,

Patricia Gilipin
