LIME, trade union at odds
Barbados (CMC):

A showdown is brewing between the country's largest trade union, the Barbados Workers Union (BWU), and telecommunications giant LIME over the company's decision to lay off more than a hundred employees.

BWU General Secretary Sir Roy Trotman is upset that LIME - the Caribbean operations of British firm Cable and Wireless - over the circumstances relating to the sending home of 116 workers here and has threatened to launch an islandwide demonstration over the matter.

"I am calling for a national protest in one form or another against Cable and Wireless. We have not yet reached the stage where we are going to take work stoppage because the matter is at the level of the Labour Department," Sir Roy told members of the media on Wednesday.
