Stafanie Taylor, Jamaica's Under-19 women team captain and ace West Indies women's batter, says her experience and outstanding team support were the winning ingredients for the just-concluded inaugural West Indies Under-19 women's championships in St Lucia.

Speaking shortly after the team's arrival from St Lucia on Tuesday, Taylor, who was the region's top scorer at the ICC Women's World Cup in Australia earlier this year, said her teammates believed in her and as the captain, she took on the responsibility.

"With my experience and their inexperience, we were able to gel together and perform admirably," said Taylor, who emerged from the championships as the leading runs scorer.

"It was my first time as captain and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience," she added.

Taylor amassed 215 runs from the team's four matches, including the final. In the final she grabbed 4-30 with her off-spin and then struck a blistering 70 at better than a run-a-ball as Jamaica, in reply to Guyana's 164-9 off their allotted 50 overs, scored 167-6 with more than 16 overs to spare.

Most experienced

"Knowing that I was the most experienced in the squad, the girls believed in me and showed me a lot of respect and I told myself I would not let them down.

"It was just amazing as I came out of the tournament with 215 runs and the MVP title. I couldn't have asked for more.

"It's now on to the ICC women's Twenty20 World Championship to be held in England in June where I hope to do well and show the world what I am capable of," 17-year-old Taylor explained.

Cleon Smith, head coach of the team, said the team performed according to plan.

"They were excellent. They performed exactly as I wanted. During our preparation camps, players were given specific roles and during the tournament they executed these roles," he said.
