WAKING UP on the beach in Negril, Westmoreland, on January 1, 2005, was not just a special start to a new year for Dominique Brown, but the beginning of a new adventure. Driven by her passion for music, Brown dedicated herself to her musical talents and formed the band Random Chaos.

A then interior designer by day, Random Chaos lead singer Brown, as well as lead guitarist Jason Worton, bassist Trevor Thompson and drummer Craig 'Flee' Lee now work tirelessly to create a unique sound that mixes a number of genres. A very animated Dominique Brown described her life-changing decision to pursue music to The Sunday Gleaner.

"I just woke up one morning and decided I wasn't going to be an interior designer anymore, but to follow my heart. I was tired of being haunted by my dreams for years; I have a distaste of dying without pursuing my dreams," she said.

Making waves

The path to success has not been a bed of roses for Brown, but Random Chaos has slowly begun to make waves. The group has made small appearances at Redbones, Suzie's and Tony's Bar, in addition to more private functions. Usually, Random Chaos elicits an 'interested' and perplexed reaction from audiences which strive to understand its sound: a mix of jazz and rock from Brown's side and rooted in reggae through Worton's love of the genre. According to Brown, it isn't always easy getting a Jamaican crowd to accept their sound.

"We've been taught that our music should sound a particular way. For Jamaica, we have to make a little reggae to make it communicable to Jamaican people. When you're in an environment where our music isn't easy to understand, we have to familiarise it. I don't want us to buss big in Europe. I want to buss big in Jamaica first," she said.

Songs in arsenal

With this drive for success pushing them, Brown and the rest of the group spent months rehearsing, writing and developing their music and voices. Some of the songs Random Chaos has out currently are I Killed My Boyfriend, Death Is Coming, Wasting Time and the most recent, Discharged. These are only a few of the songs Random Chaos has in their arsenal, as they are planning to voice 16 more by December. After that, the band aspires to release its debut album independently, with a number of original songs, as well as cover versions.

"We're hoping to one day rock the world, market Random Chaos as much as possible. Personally, I'd like to be able to do a lot of touring," Brown said.
