NO DRIVER can feel safe or be comfortable in these times with a car that is constantly breaking down. "When you are not getting good service from your car, it's like an old wife," quips Carol Sutherland, a nurse.
How well you treat your vehicle determines whether you will get good service most of the time. Without proper servicing even "a brand-new car can sound like an old junk. Conversely, an old jalopy can carry a smooth sound to the ear," says Ameir Johnson, an experienced St Andrew-based auto mechanic with over 30 years experience in the motoring world.
"Mechanical negligence is driving negligence, and this can spell trouble for drivers and other road users.
"A motor can show its age not only by the way it looks, but how it sounds. However, the car-owner can deal with both through observation, and paying attention to details," he adds. According to Johnson, if your car sounds like an 'old truck' it could have serious problems, but squeaks and rattles are not likely to be serious. He advises motorists to use a spray lubricant on the hinges of the doors, hood and trunk to prevent them from squeaking.
Fender noise
"Noises from fenders, bumpers or grille might be caused by loose bolts," Johnson points out. If the noise sounds like it is coming from under the vehicle, it could be that fasteners are loose. A mechanic will need to place the car on a lift and carefully inspect the exhaust system for such problems. Squealing can mean a loose drive belt as well. A loud roaring could probably mean a hole in the muffler. Other noises could signal more serious problems and so should be checked out by a competent car doctor.
In terms of appearance, the auto mechanic suggests a splendid wash using a mild soap, and this should be done in the shade. Vinyl top can be washed with mild soap lukewarm water and a soft-bristle brush, followed by a vinyl top dressing.

The following are maintenance jobs which are of paramount importance, advises Johnson.
